Experts & Social Media Influencers shares “General Advice on Blogging for Newcomers” : An Expert Round Up Journal :

If you’re one of the people who started to know me from the early days of my blogging career, you must remember the journey till date.

As I had to start right from the scratch, being an entertainment A/V media personal turned blogger it was hard to understand the alternative media format from day one, it was even tougher as I was less into coding…

I admit it was relatively challenging but not impossible because my desire to learn and share thought was even stronger than my technical disabilities.

Today, when I look back, I see it as a wonderful journey with ups and downs(the failures have taught me the most), learning(from various individuals and their opinions), sharing them, building a small yet healthy community with my friends, followers and bloggers and keep evolving every time.

On social media and social forums, I have often come across newbies who are not sure of where to start a blog from or at the mid of confusion regarding why they can’t scale?

When I see those young possibilities it also reminds me of my early stages of trouble and helplessness.

To honour the journey, my learning(till date) and those great peoples whom I follow & learn consistently, I want to pass it on to the newcomers in blogging or video blogging(vlogging).

So, let’s understand

What is blogging?

A blog (origin from the word weblog) is a place on the internet where an individual, small group or community can share opinions, thoughts, express personal views or even enlist his or hers experiences on a particular matter.

The interesting part of this open platform is, it gives an individual the liberty to put up its unique vision and so, you will hardly find two blogs with identical perspective/content(until & unless it’s copied).

Being one of the most democratic and interactive medium, a blogger is more likely to build a loyal community, an online publisher can be in touch with his/her audience where its reader can agree or disagree with the views and even they can carry forward the discussion(via comments below the post) which is rarely found on mainstream media or its platforms.

It interestingly builds a communication bound and interpersonal relationships which seem fascinating to me.

It’s scope in the coming days:

As the internet space is growing each day so does competition among brands or organisations.

Generally, these days brands have become more inclined to social influencers or bloggers.

Guess WHY?

Due of the above reason of unique views of online publishers and their interactivity with readers, brands have realised they can reach out to their audience organically which also built sustainable trust.

There comes the scope for blogger to earn a living(full-time or even as part timers) via various monetization methods like:

  • 1. Sponsored Journal or video content
  • 2. Affiliate Marketing (earning a percentage via guiding and recommending products or services)
  • 3. Display ADS etc. to name few.

Tips to follow before starting up a blog online or at early stages:

A decade ago, blogging/video blogging was not so popular nor it was understood by many.

It was the time when a blogger would find hard to convince his guardian that it could be a full-time profession or you can earn a living out of content publishing on the web.

But, now the time has change, especially the young generation have started realising its value and so does the volume of new online contributors and newbies are increasing every day which is great for the internet space but does it really impact the quality of information on the internet in correspondence to the ratio??

In reality, more than 90% of the new contributors in India hardly last for three to six months from the day started(which is to my view is alarming!!).

In this post, you will learn where lies the defect and its possible solution as I will extend this blog post to advise of authoritative influencers, authors and expert blogger across the globe whom I admire and have personally requested to share their views on “Blogging for Newcomers”.

Let’s find out what the experts/regular bloggers has to say on this topic.

Based on my social media research, queries, and feedbacks from newbies in blogging I have asked few questions to the respected professionals:

  • 1. General Definition of Blogging/Vlogging according to you.
  • 2. Basic advice to start-up a blog online(the essentials that can’t be ignored)

Q. General Definition of Blogging/Vlogging according to you & it’s scope in the long run :

Blogging/vlogging is sharing your thoughts, ideas, knowledge, facts or any kind of creativity with a wide spectrum of audience through the medium of internet.

I think it has a great scope in the long run. And the best part is anybody can do it. There is some talent in each and everyone. And blogging or vlogging can be a great way to let the whole world know about it.

Some people are even full-time bloggers and vloggers as it is a great source of income too.

Q. Basic advice to start-up a blog online (the essentials one can’t ignore) :

Just start. Really!! Don’t think too much.

You find something really important or inspiring which you believe should be shared just go ahead.

It might seem weird at first and you will wonder how are you going to continue. But don’t worry. You’ll come across ideas for content once you start because you will start looking at things in a way which can be a content for the blog.

Also, you might find on the internet it’s best to buy a domain and stuff but if you are very new then I believe you should start with google Blogger or WordPress.

Once you are in the flow you can buy a domain and transfer. It’s a hassle-free work.

Also, share your posts on social media. People won’t know about your post no matter how great they are until and unless you tell them.

Maintain a diary where you can write down your ideas as a rough draft. And for your content, just be honest and real. Be yourself and have faith in yourself.

Q. Common mistakes to avoid in the early stage of blogging :

Mistakes.. well I don’t care about making mistakes on my blog because I believe I am still learning. There’s so much there I know nothing about.

But what I would say is write in simple words, so that most people can understand. Your blog is a medium to communicate with your readers and not a platform to show off. I don’t know about others but I have read a lot of blogs where you need google side by side to literally decode the meaning of a lot of words and sentences (and most words are not even English). I honestly have never gone back to the blogs after reading few posts (that too if my patience permitted). I am not trying to insult anyone but I believe simplicity would connect better.

Also, don’t make a mess with your template and decorations on the blog. Some templates are so colourful and decorated it’s like you are reading a wedding card except for the fact that you can’t actually read it gets so messy.

Keep it clean and on point.

Q. How to Stay Focused on Blogging During Tough Times/Challenges? :

Well, this is something I have faced many times.

In fact at the beginning only. I wrote two posts only to realise this is not for me. I was putting a lot of effort but then I was not sure if it’s worth it.

Moreover, I started as a travel blogger. I was worried about content. I thought at most I’ll be able to write 20-25 posts and after that, this would end. All my efforts will go in vain.

It was last year’s December. But then I took a trip during the Christmas holidays. It cleared my head. I have always given up on things I shouldn’t have and I was not ready to add my blog to the list.

I always wanted to be a blogger because I wanted to share so much with the world. So finally at the end of January, I started writing. And now my blog is already 62 posts old.

As time passed by I evolved and only got better every single day. I am still learning a lot.

And there had been several times in these 9 months when I felt like I should give up but I would write down in my diary how does it make me feel when I blog. It only makes me feel happy and proud of myself.

My advice will be to read your older posts and see how awesome you can be if you keep it going. Also, read other blogs. That is a great source of inspiration too. If they can do it why can’t you?

If it makes you happy and you love doing it then you should never give up.

Q. General Definition of Blogging/Vlogging according to you & it’s scope in the long run :

Blogging is an expression of one’s personal opinion about Life, Travel, Food, Events, Movies, Gadgets, Technology or any topic of one’s interest.

Even when, we say that it is all about one’s personal opinion, one needs to be very responsible while designing and writing posts. Since credibility can be enhanced only through unbiased writing with clarity in expression and accuracy.

Blogging’s scope is tremendous in today’s date since bloggers are known as Influencers i.e. who have the capacity to influence others through their blog posts.

Q. Basic advice to start-up a blog online (the essentials one can’t ignore) :

  • Good Domain Name,
  • Developing one’s own niche,
  • Good Layout of the blog,
  • Adding colours to the blog design as per the theme,
  • Convenience in searching the contents,
  • Home Page representing the whole blog in a concise manner.
  • Besides this, minimum required knowledge about the platform which you use viz. Blogger, WordPress, Tumbler etc. must be known.
  • Knowledge about SEO,
  • Plug-ins could be an added advantage.

Q. Common mistakes to avoid in the early stage of blogging :

Avoid being in a hurry to monetize the blog.

Instead, focus on developing the blog into a brand by coming up with interesting credible contents and enhancing the readership.

Q. How to Stay Focused on Blogging During Tough Times/Challenges? :

I am still wondering, what could be the tough time / challenges while blogging?

If it is something like writer’s block, just take a mental fast of one day, break from writing for a day and then think and write.

But it can happen very rarely, since there are enough topics for the bloggers to write when they become part of bloggers’ network like Blogadda, Indiblogger, Blogmint etc.

Another challenge could be the hacking of blog or losing the blog posts, for this, make it a habit to have a backup of all the blog posts offline too. And regularly take a backup of your blog.

Q. General Definition of Blogging/Vlogging according to you & it’s scope in the long run :

Blogging and Vlogging are just ways of documenting your life, your journey and your achievements. It’s a way to have a voice.

If you own a blog, you don’t have to depend on any media to be heard, you have your own platform. I for one, have a vision that in about 10 years from now, brands will rarely advertise via television, as bloggers are the best way to reach the audience.

So yes, it has a very good scope in the long run.

Q. Basic advice to start-up a blog online (the essentials one can’t ignore) :

Focus on the topic, choose what you are passionate about, decide on the name.

Purchase a domain as no one’s going to take you seriously if you continue with a hosted site.

Write not just because you need to write something and fill your blog, take time, and write good stuff.

Q. Common mistakes to avoid in the early stage of blogging :

  • Writing whatever when you can’t find a topic,
  • Use badly clicked pictures,
  • Dreaming of overnight success.

Q. How to Stay Focused on Blogging During Tough Times/Challenges? :

Overnight success is a fairy tale that’s not going to come true (unless are Michelle Phan).

It’s going to take some time until you get offers for collaborations and sponsored posts, but it’s going to happen.

Once you start getting feedbacks, you’ll know that you are looking at the right direction.

For me, blogging is a powerful platform that allows me to help people and share things that I know and can help others too.

And the interesting part is that I can do all this from sitting in my bad room.

Q. Basic advice to start-up a blog online (the essentials one can’t ignore) :

The quality of the content that you are providing to your blog readers is very important.

Information that you are sharing on your blog is going to make your impact on readers so be original & unique and be yourself.

Q. Common mistakes to avoid in the early stage of blogging :

Don’t go for money or think this will going to be an overnight success for you. It takes lots of efforts and patience.

I will recommend improving the quality of your blog than just going to make money.

Try to provide good content, make your blog design attractive and take every single opportunity to communicate with you readers.

I started Blogging after my Son was born. There were many challenges as I was working full time. Whatever the circumstances, do not deviate. Few mantras I followed:

Write whenever you feel to – Do not wait for Blogging time, note down the prompts right when the idea crosses your mind.

Q. General Definition of Blogging/Vlogging according to you & it’s scope in the long run :

Blogging! A term which has become a trending phenomenon of our time from many aspects.

But from the core of my heart & believe, to me Blogging is that medium which gives us a global platform to tell our story in front of the world. You don’t need anyone’s opinion, just express it louder whatever you want through your Blog.

If you ask me about its scope, then simple one word I will tell you that is “Limitless”. Yes, Limitless! Because there is no end, the way entire web is evolving day by day, online media is going to be the driving force in the global media industry. Already we are seeing the change.

Q. Basic advice to start-up a blog online (the essentials one can’t ignore) :

I don’t want to mislead any of the wannabe bloggers by saying it will take just a few minutes to start a Blog Online. Because as an experienced guy in this field I know what the real hurdles are.

It’s all in the preparation where you need to devote the real time in a serious manner. You must be worried a bit, right? Don’t be, here I am suggesting you some steps which are crucial for prep stage.

You can take it as an advice too :

  •  Find your passion & based on that choose your niche first.
  •  Decide whether you want to start on any platform like Blogger/ WordPress.com or wanna go for Self Hosted model (WordPress.org) from the beginning. Because both has it’s own pros & cons. But I will always suggest you go for 2nd option if you are serious about blogging.
  •  Now comes another hurdle…. Are you a techie? If yes then fine otherwise learn or team up with someone who can handle all the technical stuff. Hosting, Performance, Security, Backup & site related updates on a regular basis needs a knowledgeable hand. If you are a self-learner & go getter then no problem it’s all yours
  •  Marketing needed! Don’t expect that as you write great content people will automatically come. In this age of web, new media & search, getting found over search engine is a primary criterion for your blog’s success. So from day 1 start focusing on different aspects of Digital Marketing (SEO, Content Marketing, Social Media, Paid options etc.)
  •  Forget money for initial few years (1/ 2 yrs) because the way competition has grown you need to give a serious amount of time to succeed. So never ever expect a quick return.

Q. Common mistakes to avoid in the early stage of blogging :

In our early stage of blogging different kinds of distractions always try to stay ourselves apart from our goal. So, what common mistakes you must avoid?

  •  Remember you are a Blogger/ Writer first, so your first objective is to write for your readers. But instead of that to generate a specific number of articles on a regular basis if you start using different article spinning software’s or low-quality cheap content services those create a very bad impression on your blog.
  •  Growing organically (using SEO, Content Marketing) requires time. To get faster return don’t involve into any blackhat practices. Because the way search engine algos are getting smarter day by day you will never be able to hide from their radar. So don’t let your property get affected due to some bad practices.
  •  Keep patience, don’t lose hope too early. Because it actually happens with most of the newbies. After seeing lots of hypes & hooplas they come into blogging arena but after few weeks or months later when they find that everything is not going as per their expectations they get disheartened & move away. But it shouldn’t be, always remember you are coming to such a field where you have to give the test of your determination with persistence.

Q. How to Stay Focused on Blogging During Tough Times/Challenges? :

Tough/ downtime is an integral part of a bloggers/ writers life. But how to tackle those tough scenarios?

Here are some ways,

  •  Befriended with like minded people. They will support you in tough times & you will never feel alone in your journey
  •  Don’t forget your passion ever, why you had started, keep the fire on! It seriously helps in downtime
  •  Always remember you are a blogger for a good cause, not only for money.
  •  Keep learning newer things that may be related to life, future, inspiration, Technological, marketing or anything to keep yourself updated. Remember your knowledge will only help you to survive nothing else.
  •  Innovate & take some bold move what none of your competitors have think off
  •  Do not listen to the naysayers
  •  and last but not the least “Keep Blogging”

Blogging and Vlogging is an opportunity to make a difference.

I write, with a wish to help at least one person every day… forever.

This platform has great power and great responsibility. It’s also very easy to loose sight of your why.

Everything I write, I want it to create value. Sometimes I succeed , sometimes not as well. But it’s always the main reason. It’s also a great way to establish your biz/book /product/service to a wider discerning audience.

A blog means fresh content and Google loves that. What’s important is to make fresh also valuable. I think sky is the limit with this. But you need a plan and a lattice.

Lorraine Reguly  – WordingWell

about-the-contributor-lorraine-reguly-expert-roundup-post-on-blogging

Q. General Definition of Blogging/Vlogging according to you & it’s scope in the long run :

Blogging involves publishing something on your website.

Generally speaking, this is information that is published in the form of a blog post, which can include images, text, infographics, videos, links, etc.

Vlogging is simply video blogging, wherein everything is published in the form of videos.

Q. Basic advice to start-up a blog online (the essentials one can’t ignore) :

My advice for new bloggers is to narrow down your WHY.

Why are you starting a blog or a website? What is your ultimate end goal? To simply share your knowledge with others? To write about topics you’re passionate about? To make money? To become known (or famous)?

Once you have figured out your purpose for wanting to start a blog, you can then make some important decisions, such as:

  • Do I want to blog using a free platform, or am I going to get my own, hosted site?
  • What will my domain name be?
  • Will this domain name be reflective of my business, if I start one?
  • Will I be able to brand myself using this name easily?

If you’re unsure of these things and don’t know if you’ll even LIKE blogging, then I’d advise you to start on a free platform such as wordpress.com and if you find that you truly enjoy it, you can move to your own hosted site later on.

Test the waters. Figure out what you truly want to do!

There’s a great post on Wording Well for new bloggers:

5 Things New Bloggers Need to Know.

I highly suggest that ALL new bloggers read this!

Q. Common mistakes to avoid in the early stage of blogging :

New bloggers will find themselves getting overwhelmed quite quickly.

New bloggers will also make a bunch of mistakes, including the top 5 deadly ones found in this post.

There are solutions to each mistake, and they are provided there, too.

Some general advice, however, is this:

The best thing to do is to learn as much as you can about blogging by reading blogs about blogging… and do not compare yourself to the pros. Remember that every pro was once a newbie!

Another thing to do is to realise that blogging takes time. It takes time to create awesome content that everyone will love. It takes time to grow your audience. It takes time to earn money. It takes time to create and/or find images to use in your blog posts. Research takes time, too. So does networking and forming relationships with other bloggers.

Blogging is a very time-consuming act that involves creation, promotion, outreach, etc.

It’s not for those who think they can make some quick money in a flash.

Q. How to Stay Focused on Blogging During Tough Times/Challenges? :

By finding a good work-life balance, you will be able to endure even the toughest of times.

A great resource can be found at :

How to find a good work-life balance

Another tip is to have a resource of pre-written evergreen posts that you can use when you become sick or when emergencies arise.

By scheduling your posts, too, you allow yourself further flexibility in your life.

When you’re challenged in other ways, the thing to do is to persevere and be patient. Everyone experiences problems. This is NORMAL and a part of blogging!

  • Take a step back.
  • Evaluate the problem.
  • Find a solution.
  • Then move on.

It’s really that simple, even though you might be highly stressed! Remember to focus on the big picture, not each and every tiny detail.

You’ll move forward faster that way!

Thanks, Animesh!! For these marvelous pieces of advice about blogging. It will be really helpful for all wannabe bloggers, who are going to step into this beautiful world of Blogging.

I would like to mention some points, which will work as a value addition to your tips.

      1. As a newbie blogger, you should always solve the problems of your readers (Buyer personas). This will attract your readers, and as a result at the EOD, you will earn qualified visitor.

      2. In my experience, I have never seen any experts are discussing about Paid marketing. Some of the experts have talked about Off page, but they don’t aggressively advice its importance to keep aside from the crowd.

As a Digital marketer I feel that, without proper Content & Social media marketing, you never reach out to your targeted audience. They never find your content in the large ocean of information, and you will be the successful blogger when you have the plurality of reader.

Rest is absolutely perfect and realistic tips which will helpful to all the bloggers. Last but not the least, as a Digital Marketer I would like to suggest all the newbie bloggers keep a healthy balance between Organic and Paid strategy.

      1. Animesh Roy

Exactly! The balance between paid & organic strategy.

This is what most of the bloggers forgot to mention or I don’t know whether they don’t want to reveal it or not.

Because it’s the ultimate truth behind the growth of your blog.

Thanks a lot for your valuable feedback.
