Just recall 10 years back from now, if you were to introduce yourself as a blogger, what reaction would you expect from your relative or friends in your circle, well most obvious they would say “blogging is fine to hear, but what else do you do to earn a living”, isn’t it?
But, if you still have a doubt on this point, ask any professional blogger whom you know or follow, who have started back 2005 or so on.
They say (pro bloggers who started back then like
Harsh Agarwal, Amit Agarwal or be it our own Sourav Ghosh the tech bloggers from Bengal),
“it was hard to convince people that blogging can be a full-time career option
and you can be your own boss working from home
and live a great life along with money, which a traditional job can’t offer you.”
As the scenario has changed and people started to realise on the concept of blogging and it’s scope to follow, many people have started to hook into this solo-preneurship journey.
If you are one of them, then I tell you to understand the concept before dipping into it.
I found in people, confusion or vague belief about the fundamental concept of blog & other kinds of website, they can hardly differentiate.
To simplify this issue, you need to understand the root.
So let’s starting discussing :
What is a blog? ::
A blog is an online journal, or you can say a digital dairy on internet
where you can also learn(from other blogger’s blog),
write on it (from your understanding)
and share your thoughts with like-minded people.
Blogs are generally found under categories like
Lifestyle, Food, Home decor, Sports, Legal & Finance, Start-up & Entrepreneurship to Gadgets and various technology streams, etc
Well, parenting can also be a blogging category as it is gaining traction over the period, as many mom bloggers are trying to help out with their knowledge and experience to newbie mummies about a lot of common practical issues they face every day, and this is the space they look for to ask questions on the internet, as these bloggers try to solve them, the readers(newbie mothers) love it.
So what is your goal?
Choose your niche according to it.
Confusion between website vs. blog (the most talking point of many) ::
As and when I give a closer look at the question that people ask on the internet,
I have found many people doesn’t have a clear idea on blog & website. Many say they are different, other denies it.
Let me clear the cloud of confusion as I continue :
Every blog is a website but every website is not a blog.
A blog consists of information articles called blog post or journals and it is updated on a regular basis.
A blogger enlists or documents his or her knowledge on a particular topic based on its specific niche, and this website called a blog is fresh as the post are added on a regular basis, daily or alternatively (if he is an active, serious blogger).
Unlike a blog, all other websites can be considered as a showcasing platform for products and services.
As we do not find a reason to alter or update (with new) items every day from the showcase rack at our drawing room, same applies with these websites too, so they are generally static in nature.
Search engines like Google and Bing love fresh content and sites so they rank blogs higher than many other types of website for this natural reason.
Platform to choose as a blogger out of hobby::
Many ask on social networks which platform to choose as a starter, allow me to make it clear.
If writing is your liking or out of curiosity you like to join blogging then better choose platforms (free or less expensive) like
- Blogspot or Blogger by Google.Inc ,
I have also started my blogging career with this platform (which I still continue with my existing site called abhirupsblogoneasysolutions – where I write – how to guide on daily life issues and problems), later I have created & joined my official blog(visit here) on a self-hosted platform (which I will to covering later part of this post – about self-hosted sites & it’s benefit) .

- WordPress.com is also a good alternative free blogging platform to choose, for a first time blogger or someone who does blog out of love with no intention to make money out of blogging(as for now).
- Tumblr – A free platform for bloggers, do also check out Mr. Amitabh Bachhan’s blog on this network.
He is known to be the most active celebrity blogger from India.
- Facebook‘s native feature, Note is also an option to look for to publish your writing, and also very easy to socialise post as it’s a part of Facebook (world’s leading social network)
- Twitter: If you’re a microblogger – which mean you like to update one liner updates on your daily activities, then Twitter.com is a great choice you can opt for.
This platform has a very good engagement and response ratio.
For serious bloggers who want to make a career out of blogging::
If you are one of those who is into blogging for days and want to make it as your career option, in other words, earn a living out of blogging.
WordPress.org is a free CMS feature or website building tool to can choose to setup your website(premium blog), but (before that) you need to buy a hosting space to host your website
(I recommend – Hostgator hosting as I am presently using this service and I am loving it, the differentiating factor between leading companies is the back-end support which I have found really good).
Along with it, you need a custom domain like < (dot)com / (dot)org. / (dot)in > which you need to buy from various networks like –
- Namecheap (get comparatively less price bid on domains),
- Hostgator (also offers domain registration service)
- Go Daddy or Big Rocks (although I found a bit overpriced, still you can check)
- ShoutMeDomain (offers low-cost Top Level Domains(TLD) at Indian price-INR)
If you are not a coder or can’t setup WordPress blog(back-end integration) by yourself, better hire a professional in this field (charges depend on individual service charge – depending on the extended features you choose)
You may choose (recommend) paid theme (cost range from 29$ – 50$) for your website’s outlook design or non-paid but trusted – (based on authentic reviews) theme may also do pretty fine for a starter.
- You can choose from either Premium or Free from my list of Recommended Themes.
